Starlight headliner – how many stars to choose: 400, 1000 or 2500?

How to pick the right fiber optic count for your starlight headliner? Comparing 400, 800–1200 and 2500 star effects.

Planning a starlight headliner installation and not sure how many fibers to order? It's one of the most common questions we hear at Scar Studio in Warsaw. This article explains the differences and how to choose the right star count for your car.

What are the "stars" in a car ceiling?

Each star is a single optical fiber (0.5–1.5 mm diameter) woven into the headliner fabric. A hidden LED projector behind the headliner powers all the fibers simultaneously, creating hundreds of glowing points that mimic a night sky.

400 stars – when is it enough?

400 stars is the entry-level option. It creates a clear starfield effect, but the stars are visibly spaced apart. Best for:

  • Smaller cars (hatchbacks, C-segment saloons)
  • When you want an attractive effect on a tighter budget
  • Narrow headliners or those with many obstacles (sunroof, built-in lights)

Effect: Clear, distinct stars with visible spacing between them.

800–1200 stars – the sweet spot

This is the most popular range. Stars are denser, the effect looks natural and luxurious. Recommended for:

  • SUVs, D/E-segment saloons, estates
  • Customers who want the Rolls-Royce effect without maximum spend
  • Projects with 1–2 shooting star (comet) options

Effect: Dense, realistic starfield. Very close to the factory Rolls-Royce Starlight system.

2000–2500 stars – premium effect

Maximum density – identical to the Rolls-Royce Phantom effect. The stars form a seamless velvet night sky. Recommended for:

  • Large vehicles (limousines, large SUVs, VIP vans)
  • Premium projects with 3–5 shooting stars
  • Customers who want absolutely the best possible effect

Effect: Ceiling fully covered with stars. When lit, indistinguishable from the Rolls-Royce factory system.

What are shooting stars (comets)?

Shooting stars (comets) are special fibers through which a light point periodically travels, mimicking a meteor. You can programme 1 to 5 comets moving independently across the headliner. This option tends to impress passengers most.

How to choose – simple guide

| Car size | Recommended star count |

|---|---|

| Hatchback / small saloon | 400–600 |

| Saloon / estate class D | 800–1200 |

| SUV / large estate | 1000–1500 |

| Limousine / large premium SUV | 1500–2500 |

Golden rule: The larger the headliner, the more stars you need for the effect to look natural – just like the real night sky.

Warranty and lifespan

Fiber optics do not heat up and do not wear out – the fibers themselves have an unlimited lifespan. The LED projector is rated for tens of thousands of hours. We provide a 12-month warranty on every installation.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How many stars does a Rolls-Royce Starlight headliner have?

The Rolls-Royce Phantom uses 1,340 to over 1,600 fibers. Our 1,200–1,500 star installations are visually indistinguishable.

Does more stars mean higher cost?

Yes – every extra 200–300 fibers means more installation time. We provide individual quotes based on your specific car and requirements.

Are shooting stars available on all packages?

Yes, comets can be added to any configuration. We recommend at least 800 background stars for comets to look impressive.

How long does installation take?

2 to 4 working days depending on star count and headliner complexity.

Can I choose the color of the stars?

Stars typically glow white or slightly blue-white. Warm white is also available. The intensity and tone is controlled via the projector.
